Why is Main Roads trialing these signs on road trains?

The trial has been driven by feedback from the transport industry and their experience that a large percentage of general road users don’t know how to interact with road trains or have an understanding of how long a heavy vehicle can be when the “road train or long vehicle’ signs are being used.

Do all road train drivers need to trial these new signs?

No – only transport operators who have decided to participate in the trial can trial the new signs.  Even if a transport operator has joined the trial – there is no requirement for them the use the new signage on every one of their road train combinations.

Do all transport operators need to participate in this trial?

No– this is a voluntary trial. If transport operators don’t want to participate they are not required to.

I want to participate in the trial – what do I need to do to join?

You can register your interest via hvs@mainroads.wa.gov.au

I’ve heard that these signs are being trialled on the front and the rear of a road train combination. Is this correct ?

Not true.  The road train signage trial is looking at replacing the signage on the rear hauling unit only  in a road train configuration (the last trailer).

Depending on the type of trailer being used at the rear of the road train combination – the new signs might need to be ‘two-piece’ or may be ‘one-piece’ signage.

The placement of the signage should be where the existing rear facing ‘Road Train’ and or ‘Long Vehicle’ signage is currently placed.

The trial is looking to understand if a change to the signage on the end unit of a road train combination provides general road users a better understanding of how long the road train to better inform their decision to overtake their road train – particularly new drivers, international and interstate travellers and caravaners.

How do I provide feedback on this trial?

You can provide feedback using  the survey at www.mysaytrasnport.wa.gov.au  or send an email to hvs@mainroads.wa.gov.au

How can I submit suggestions on how to improve the signs that are being trialled?

Suggestions can be submitted via the survey at www.mysaytrasnport.wa.gov.au  or send an email to hvs@mainroads.wa.gov.au

What else is Main Roads doing to educate general road users about interacting with heavy vehicles?

In 2021 and 2022 we began our community awareness campaigns with the release of our #biggerthanyou campaign which focused on interacting with Oversize Overmass (OSOM) loads and Agricultural OSOM vehicles.

In early 2023 we’ll release our next community awareness campaign which will be focused on interacting with Road Trains and Long Vehicles.

What is Main Roads going to do with all the survey feedback from the trial?

We’ll use it to inform our “interacting with road trains and long vehicles’ community awareness campaign and to feed into the trial assessment.

How long will the Road Train Signage trial go for?

The Road Train Signage Trial will finish on 30 June 2023.
