Since the closure of the Caledonian Avenue level crossing in April 2022, Main Roads has been working closely with the community and stakeholders to develop a masterplan for road, path and streetscape upgrades that has the potential to enhance the Maylands town centre and encourage further growth and development.

What has been achieved so far?

  • Installed new protected bike lanes on Railway Parade, making it safer for cyclists to travel between Meltham and Maylands stations. Completed in late 2022.
  • Installed a temporary safety treatment at the intersection of Guildford Road and Seventh Avenue, banning through and right-turn movements from Seventh Avenue. Completed in May 2023.
  • Completed planning and advertised a construction contract to install new traffic signals on the Hotham Bridge, at the intersection of Railway Parade and Whatley Crescent. Due for completion in mid-2024, this will enable direct access to Maylands town centre via a new dedicated right-turn lane.

What is being proposed as part of the future masterplan?

  • New traffic signals at Guildford Road and Seventh Avenue to improve safety and connectivity for road users and pedestrians (funded for construction in 2025-26).
  • Upgraded traffic signals at Guildford Road and Eighth Avenue to improve pedestrian crossings (funded for construction in 2025-26).
  • Traffic calming on Whatley Crescent (funding available for some elements) and streetscape upgrades (subject to future funding).
  • Traffic calming and streetscape upgrades on Seventh and Eighth Avenues (subject to future funding).
  • Potential bus station to provide better connectivity to the town and train station (subject to future planning and funding).
