Tonkin Highway Extension, Thomas Road to South Western Highway
We undertook an online survey for the Tonkin Highway Extension project from 10 July to 10 August 2020 to hear the views of residents and businesses.
- 600 community members participated.
- >80% of the 401 predominantly local residents supported the plans to extend Tonkin Highway.
- Topics of importance were: local access changes, design, pedestrian/cycling/equine connections, noise, safety and environment.
Since then, the Tonkin Highway Extension’s scope of works and budget have been expanded based on traffic modelling, community and stakeholder feedback, road safety audits and reviews, local access and connectivity, along with other factors. The project’s budget is now $755 million.
An interlinking project has also been announced, the Thomas Road Upgrade project, which includes an interchange with Tonkin Highway and the upgrade of Thomas Road from Tonkin Highway to South Western Highway. This project’s budget is $290 million.
The combined funding commitment for both project’s is $1.045 billion.
