Why is Westport investigating Cockburn Sound as a potential port location?
Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Linkedin Email this link06 Aug 2019The most common question that Westport gets asked is why the Taskforce is considering Kwinana/Cockburn Sound as a possible location for a new container port facility.There is a long history of studies that have been done into possible locations for a second major container port for Perth and each study has reinforced the point that Cockburn Sound is arguably the only suitable location for another major port within the Greater Perth area.

Westport Fact Sheets is currently at this stageThis stage will further investigate issues that were not closed during Stage 2, and activities such as corridor protection, developing detailed designs and commencement of environmental monitoring in Cockburn Sound to start building resilience.
The Westport process will continue to be consultative, supported by a strong governance framework and based on reliable, well-researched information and realistic forecasting data.

2021-2024 Stage 3
this is an upcoming stage for Westport Fact SheetsDuring this stage, Westport will be continuing activities such as corridor protection; environmental studies in preparation for project referral to the Environmental Protection Authority and to develop resilience building initiatives in Cockburn Sound; assessing the commercial implications of transition options; preparation of a business case; and targeted engagement with key stakeholders and interest groups.
